The KAMALA Quilt

KAMALA Quilt ~ 2020
KAMALA Quilt ~ 2020

This KAMALA Quilt is my most recent Morse Code quilt. My previous Morse Code quilts are LOVE, FAITH, HOPE, PEACE, and JOY. I was inspired to create this quilt in 2019 because Senator Kamala Harris of California campaigned to become President of the United States. Politically, I am an Independent.  As a Black woman, I was proud of Sen. Harris’ campaign.  I contributed money to her campaign. I planned to “max out” with her. If Sen. Harris had become the Democratic nominee, I planned to volunteer to help her get elected. I was ALL IN.

I designed this quilt in October 2019, but I did not have a chance to make the quilt prior to Sen. Harris suspending her campaign in December 2019. I remember that day vividly. I was in the process of leaving my office to walk to the courthouse. My husband sent me a text message letting me know that Sen. Harris was out of the race. I was devastated. I continued to follow the Democratic primary process, but it wasn’t the same.

On August 11, 2020, when former Vice President Joe Biden announced that he selected Sen. Harris as his running mate, I was beyond elated! Once again, my husband was the one who alerted me to the news via text message. I received new inspiration to select fabric from my stash and make this quilt.

The colors of the KAMALA Quilt are based on the colors from Sen. Harris’ presidential campaign. The colors and font Sen. Harris chose for her campaign were actually a nod to Rep. Shirley Chisolm’s 1972 presidential campaign.

Thank you for reading. Be blessed.
